Dear Mr. Loux:

I'm returning your questionnaire only partly filled out
for several reasons.

	1. I really don't know the answers to many of your questions
about Stanford even though I have been a professor here for 27
years. I have never been on a faculty committee that considered
university-wide teaching, and I suppose that's the only way I
would have found out much about how it goes in other departments
and schools.

	2. The questionnaire seems to assume that the practices
would be university-wide or maybe simply ignores considerations
applicable to science and engineering departments. For example,
there are no questions related to undergraduate opportunities
to participate in research.

	3. Stanford is pre-eminently a research university, and
there are no questions relating how research activities interact
with teaching and influence it. There is also no real sense of
the compromises that this requires. It seems to assume that the
sole purpose of a university is undergraduate education.

\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
